Abdul Bari

Abdul Bari Bablu
Age: 20 years
Occupation: Businessman of agricultural products
Education: Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC)
Address: Purbo Charbata village, Purbo Charbata Union, Subarnachar Upazilla, Noakhali district

Mr. Bablu is involved in farming and poultry business. Although he has less education, he is well aware of current national and global news. He has a monthly income of BDT 3,000.00.
Mr. Bablu runs Mukta Poultry Feed in his village. About six hundred broilers of his farm died in a rare disease. Although they were given vaccines for New Castle and Gambora diseases. The loss of these broilers cost him approximately BDT 60,000.00. He was devastated by the loss. He discussed about his poultry problem with his neighbors. They advised him to get information service from the local Pallitathya Kendra (the Rural Information Centre).  At the same time, one day he was approached by an  infomediary of the local Pallitathya Kendra (the Rural Information Centre) who let him know about different information services. He also invited him to attend an upcoming Agricultural Camp organized by the local Centre. Then Mr. Bablu came to the centre on December 7, 2005 and received information service from Jeeon CD Content free of cost. He also attended the Agricultural Camp organized by the centre in the following year and learnt a lot about taking care of poultry scientifically and efficiently.
Mr. Bablu learnt from the camp that in rearing broiler chickens, giving vaccines are not enough. There are lots more to do to run poultry efficiently.
After attending the camp, none of Mr. Bablu’s broiler ever gets affected by diseases due to precautions he took based on the information received from the camp.
Beside running poultry, Mr. Bablu also produces different types of agricultural products like rice, vegetables etc.
One day, he found that his cultivated brinjal field is affected by a rare disease and he lost all brinjals. Mr. Bablu used to know that usage of husks and ashes are useful to fertile the cultivated land. But he never applied these in his land out of unknown fear. He became worried because he makes his living by selling this kind of agricultural produces. He sought help to his neighbors. They advised him to get help from the local agricultural field officer regarded as Block Supervisor, but he failed to get hold of him. Then Mr. Bablu did not waste any time in visiting the centre on December, 2005 and received information service through the letter-to-letter Help Line ICT service mode by spending BDT 4.00.
From the received information, Mr. Bablu learnt that his belief to make land fertile is not wrong. In addition, he also learnt that any farmer can be benefited by applying organic fertilizer without the usage of insecticides. Thus both ecological balances can be protected and money can be saved.
After getting benefits from the received information from the centre, Mr. Bablu became a frequent visitor of the centre. On April 25, 2006 he received information on cultivated lady’s finger, on May 12, 2006 information on Property Rights, on May 14, 2006 information about paddy seedbed, on May 18, 2006 information about pisciculture project, and on May 24, 2006 information to cultivate roses. In addition to these, he kept coming to the centre for all types of his problems to receive key livelihood information.

Mr. Anowar Koshai  and Ms. Anowara Begam are making a tough living with a slim monthly family income of BDT 1,000.00 only on average.
The daughter of this couple, Ms. Rokhsana (18) was kidnapped by one local vagabond, Mr. Nizamuddin (20), son of a local influential person Mr. Siddiq Saodagor in 2004. Mr. Anowar Koshai and Ms. Anowara Begam were shocked and started looking for their daughter at all known places but they failed to get hold of their daughter. At one point, Mr. Anowar Koshai filed a case for his missing daughter with the local police against Mr. Alauddin, identifying him as the kidnapper. Then one month and seven days after the kidnapping took place, Ms. Rokhsana escaped the place in Chittagong while she was held captive and returned to her parents when Mr. Nijamuddin was away. In the mean time, the police arrested Mr. Nizamuddin and sent him to the prison by the order of the local court.
Then Mr. Nizamuddin’s father approached Mr. Anowar Koshai with association of few local leaders to arrange the marriage ceremony between the kidnapper and the kidnapped victim, if the victim’s family withdraws the filed case against the kidnapper and if the kidnapper Mr. Nizamuddin gets out of the prison. The victim’s parents agreed to this deal. As a result, Mr. Anowar Koshai bailed Mr. Nizamuddin out of the prison and Mr. Nizamuddin and Ms. Rokhsana got married.
Then Mr. Anowar Koshai filed a petition to the court for the withdrawal of the case. But the government appointed Public Prosecutor (PP) and the court staff is doing their best to keep the case going in order to waste poor Mr. Anowar’s precious money. This made Mr. Anowar very upset and worried.
In the mean time, the couple learnt about East Charbata Pallitathya Kendra (East Charbata Rural Information Centre) from an infomediary of the centre on February, 2006. At that time, two legal aides of D.Net Help Desk went there to collect legal information of some of the victims who sought informational help from the centre earlier. One of the infomediaries introduced Mr. Anowar Koshai to the lawyers.
The two lawyers of D.Net took the couple to Maijdi, nearby famous town to introduce them to Advocate Mohibullah, General Secretary of National Legal Aid Organization, a local chapter of government legal aid NGO. Later, Advocate Mohibullah introduced Mr. Anowar Koshai to Advocate Sheikh Ahammad Bhuiyan, a government PP of Women and Children Torture Prevention Tribunal with Noakhali Judge Court.
Finally, Advocate Sheikh Ahammad Bhuiyan assured Mr. Anowar that he would do everything possible to settle down the case as soon as possible. After this, the case is moving fast for a settlement.
Due to known involvement of the centre in providing key legal information to Mr. Anowar, now-a-days the court staff does not claim any bribes to Mr. Anowar anymore. Ms. Rokhsana is having a happy married life with Mr. Nizamuddin and now they have a daughter named Shirin Akhter.

Rokeya Begum

Ms. Rokeya Begam Ratna
Age: 26 years
Occupation: Homemaker
Education: 5th grade
Address: Char Majid village, Charbata union, Subarnachar upazilla, Noakhali district

Ms. Rokeya Begam Ratna is a homemaker. She is looking after her family that has a slim monthly income of BDT 1,200.00 on average, other than the annual income of agricultural produces.
Ms. Rokeya is known as a very naive person in her village who is very helpful by nature. Ms. Momena, wife of Mr. Kabir Ahmed and mother of Mr. Jamaluddin borrowed BDT 5,000.00 from her. Ms. Rokeya lent the money at once due to the urgency of Ms. Momena. But when the payment came to near, Ms. Momena started showing illogical alibis. This attitude shocked the lender. Then Ms. Rokeya discussed about the issue with some of her neighbors and they advised her to go for the rural arbitration meeting.
Then several arbitration meetings were taken place presided over by Mr. Oli Shaodagor, an expert arbitrator of the area and these meeting run for the following two years . In the last such meeting, accused Ms. Momena paid Ms. Rokeya BDT 2,200.00. But the lender Ms. Rokeya kept asking the borrower Ms. Momena to pay the full amount as early as possible.
At this point, the borrower went to the local NGO Shagorika to get a verdict through their legal aids with an expectation to get a final say from them in her favor. Due to this request of the borrower, Shagorika arranged a local arbitration meeting that also gave a verdict in favor of the lender.
When Ms. Momema failed to get a rural decision in her favor in this regard, she got mad at Ms. Rokeya and started giving the lender threats by her husband and son. The repeated threats made Ms. Rokeya worried a lot. She started looking for a permanent settlement to this.
In the mean time, Ms. Rokeya became known to an infomediary of the local Pallitathya Kendra (the Rural Information Centre) along with its different information services, including information on the area of law and human rights.
As the last resort, Ms. Rokeya came to the centre in February, 2006 and met with a lawyer of the Help Desk. That lawyer went to local chapter of the government legal aid organization BLAST along with Ms. Rokeya. But BLAST refused to play a role about the issue due to the lesser disputed amount. Then the Help Desk lawyer learnt from another organization NLAO that usually the Union Parishad (the grass root chapter of the local government in Bangladesh) arbitrates on such issues with similar amount of money.
The lawyer asked the infomediaries of the centre to proceed with Ms. Rokeya’s problem in the local Union Parishad.
While the infomediaries started their effort on behalf of Ms. Rokeya, somehow Ms. Momena learnt about the move of Pallitathya Kendra. Ms. Momena did not waste any time but to rushed to Mr. Oli Shaodagor promising him to pay the lender BDT 2,000.00 as early as possible and apologized for the given repeated threats to Ms. Rokeya.
Within a few days of the promise, she made a payment to Ms. Rokeya a sum of BDT 1,000.00.
Ms. Rokeya became surprised and thankful to the centre and to its infomediaries for their heartiest effort to solve her problem. Since then, she relied on the centre’s effective services for her various problems. In one of such visits, Ms. Rokeya came to the centre on June 15, 2006 to receive information about the usefulness of eating fruits, which she received from Jeeon CD Content at free of cost.

Ibrahim Khalil

Mr. Ibrahim Khalil
Age: 30 years
Occupation: A village beggar and a former businessman
Education: Name sign only
Address: Charbata village, Purbo Charbata union, Subarnachar upazilla, Noakhali district

Mr. Ibrahim Khalil is a poor physically disabled beggar with great ambition to improve his livelihood. He is the son of Mr. Noor Ahammad and Ms. Manoja Khatun. He hardly makes a slim monthly income of BDT 1,000.00 on average for his 7-member family.
His family used to depend on his earning from begging. He usually begs in the adjacent area of the local Pallitathya Kendra (the Rural Information Centre). Thus he gradually learnt about different information services of the centre from the villagers and the infomediaries of the centre. He also learnt that the centre provides information on Non-Farm Economic Activities. This knowledge made Mr. Khalil become curious about visiting the centre one day.
Thus Mr. Khalil came to the centre on July 1, 2006 to receive information in connection with starting a business to stop his profession as a beggar and earn a decent living. The infomediaries advised him to start making of Thonga (paper-made packet to carry light-weighted items) at his home and sell those to the local stores. He did not has to pay anything to receive the information using CD Content and watching the video show on staring a thonga-making business with less capital.
He applied the received information  and started supplying thonga, charging BDT 18.00-20.00 per kilogram. Thus he was able to ensure a profit margin of BDT 5.00-10.00 against per kilogram.
But he was not able to continue the business due to piled up outstanding accounts receivables on his side. The stores that took his stuff on credit did not pay him up timely. So he has to rely on his degrading begging profession again due to lack of BDT 2,000.00 of slim capital.
But Mr. Khalil is very satisfied about the received services from the centre and the willingness of the infomediaries to bring a positive change in his livelihood. But he prefers to receive such services from his home due to his physical constraint.

In this regard, he thinks that a photocopier will be very helpful since the nearest one is located at Khasher Hat, which is three and half kilometre away from the Union Parishad (the grass root level of local government), that houses the centre. He thinks that centre needs to have more human resources. The number of signboards about the centre needs to be increased. It will be better for the people, if the centre can provide them with one agriculturist and arrange a Health Camp with the participation of a female doctor for gynecology related complications and a male doctor for medicine. Moreover, he thinks that if the infomediaries arrange field meetings with the local people based on village locations in every week and go for the mobilization with some sort of mobile video arrangement, then the centre will be able to create mass awareness about the centre and its various effective services.
